I’m an ENTJ (and Enneagram 5) married to an INJF (and Enneagram 9) and I’ve been listening to some of your stuff off and on for several years. When you did the series on each type in terms of Dominant, Creative, Normalizing, and Harmonizing from Dr. Nardi’s work it made SO much sense! I’ve been a harmonizing ENTJ all my life (34 years old) but my wife was a Dominant INFJ especially when we got married 9 years ago.
It’s been fascinating for me to see her getting more in touch with the wholistic aspect of her “Perspectives” and “Harmony,” while I’ve been leaning into becoming more analytical in my “Effectiveness” and “Perspectives” functions.
All that being said, I have gotten to very closely observe non-stereotypical examples of introverted intuition as a analytically oriented function in my wife, an INFJ, and as a harmonizing oriented function in myself, an ENTJ.
For my wife, she used to describe herself as pushing or trying to force her brain to “produce” or generate new connections and ideas. As a high school English teacher she regularly used it to create new tests, worksheets, PowerPoints, and other lessons for school. It was only when she got Covid in 2020 and lost a lot of mental focus, clarity, and function temporarily, that she began to understand what she had. For her it is a kind of focused synthesizing and producing of connections and ideas for lessons and tests, as well as peering down the corridors of time to predict outcomes, or jumping into people’s heads to understand how to counsel them and advise them. All of it is channeled and propelled forward by a focusing of the energy in order to produce and create.
For me, on the other hand, I’ve always taken the intuitive connections I make for granted. I’ve tended to view the insights from synthesizing information as a kind of natural fermentation of the ideas being ingested. I never even imagined that this synthesizing, imagining, pattern recognition, future-casting, and perspective-entering could be actively used to generate rather than simply receive input and bubble-up with ideas here and there. As I’ve learned more about being an ENTJ (a discovery which made a radical difference to me about 5 years ago) and talked with my wife and observed her analytical focusing of her Ni, I’ve begun to understand how to do it myself. It has been immensely empowering to understand these two attitudes about all the functions.
I was writing to say that I have found a lot of things that you write about valuable, but I did feel like this episode’s description of the Ni’s energy didn’t resonate with mine or my wife’s experience very much. I appreciate you guys being willing to put your thoughts out there even as you’re figuring it out, but I’m just saying I think that the Ni descriptions could use some more refinement.

I think I’m an INFP this week, for real I’m so indecisive. I identify with the analytic style of NE but want to be more wholistic.

Hi. ENFJ here. This podcast has given me so much insight! I used to have a tendency to use my Ni-analytical in a kind of toxic way towards myself and others. And since I started my self-improvment journey, I have been trying to focus on Ni-holistic. It has brought me so much peace and serenity. I am a tarot reader now, I am studying a coaching course (to become rather receptive) and when I tap into this holistic energy, people get open-mouthed, as, I suppose, my Fe directs all my “perspective power” to them. I don’t know if it makes sense, however, it is how I feel it. :))))))
